Where the high street stops

Prestige car finance

Prestige car finance is specialist lending against cars that mainstream motor finance will not price properly. The difference is not the size of the loan. It is that the underwriting has to follow the individual car rather than a trade guide, and most lenders are not set up to do that.

What makes prestige car finance different

Prestige car finance is finance underwritten against the specific car rather than against a book value for the model. That single difference is what separates it from mainstream motor finance, and it is why the high street tends to decline or badly misprice these cars rather than lend against them.

A volume lender prices a three year old hatchback from a trade guide, and the guide is right often enough that the system works. There is no such guide for a car built in a run of a few hundred, and applying one anyway produces a number that is wrong in whichever direction happens to be convenient. A specialist lender values the car instead, which takes longer and produces a defensible figure.

The second difference is what the lender is comfortable securing against. Cars that are appreciating, cars out of production, cars where the specification moves the value substantially: all of these are ordinary here and unusual almost everywhere else.

What prestige car finance costs

A worked example at the middle of this market. A car at £250,000 with £175,000 advanced against it, over 48 months at an indicative 8.9 per cent, is about £4,347 a month and £208,636 in total.

Rates in this market are not published, and any broker quoting one before seeing the car is quoting a number they invented. What is publishable is the shape: the rate follows the car, the borrower and the loan to value, and the loan to value is the lever that moves it most.

Fees deserve more attention here than rates. Arrangement fees on specialist lending vary widely, and the early settlement position matters disproportionately on cars people tend to change more often than the term of the agreement.

The manufacturers prestige car finance covers

We hold indicative values for 92 models across 16 manufacturers, from £30,000 to £5,400,000. Every one of them has a page showing what the model is worth and what a lender would typically advance against it.

Four of those manufacturers have a dedicated site of their own, covering purchase finance in far more depth than this page does: Ferrari finance, Bentley finance, Koenigsegg finance and Pagani finance. The rest are covered at Hypercar Finance.

On this site the focus is narrower and more specific: what a car you already own will release. The manufacturer index lists all sixteen with their value ranges.

Who prestige car finance is arranged for

Limited companies, LLPs, sole traders and individuals. A large share of what we arrange is written in a company name, with the lender underwriting the company and a director’s guarantee alongside it. The tax treatment and any benefit in kind position are questions for your accountant rather than for us.

Where an agreement is regulated consumer credit, it is arranged through an FCA authorised broker partner and that firm carries the regulated activity and the advice. Business agreements entered into wholly or predominantly for business purposes are not regulated consumer credit and we arrange those ourselves. You are told which route applies before anything is signed.

There is no minimum advance. That is deliberate: a minimum reads as an entry threshold, and the smallest useful piece of work we do is often a conversation that ends with us saying the deal does not stack up.

Prestige car finance questions

What counts as a prestige car for finance purposes?
In practice, any car a volume lender cannot price from a trade guide. That includes low-volume supercars and hypercars, cars out of production, heavily specified examples and cars that are appreciating. Value alone is not the test, although most cars meeting it are expensive.
Can I get prestige car finance through a limited company?
Yes, and it is a large share of what we arrange. The lender underwrites the company rather than only the individual, and a director’s guarantee is common. Where the car is owned personally and the borrowing is corporate, the ownership has to be resolved first.
Is there a minimum advance?
No. We publish no minimum because a minimum reads as an entry threshold and implies we only cover unregulated business lending, which is not the case.
